King Dauid wyth that his puiſſaunt armie, the ſixth of October entred Northumberlande, and comming to a fortreſſe not farre off from the borders called Lydell,The Fort of Lydell. they lay rounde about that place for the ſpace of three dayes, without giuing thereto any aſſault: but the fourth day they aſſayled it tight fiercely, and in the ende entred by fiue force, ſleaing the more part of all thoſe whiche they founde wythin the houſe.Sir Walter Selby behea|ded by the Scottes. The Captaine ſir Walter Selby was taken aliue, but immediately by king Dauid his commaundement had his head ſtryken off, and was not permitted to haue ſo muche time as to make his confeſſion, which he inſtantly deſired to haue done, but it woulde not be graunted.

Compare 1587 edition: 1 Lauercoſt.From thence the army remoued, and went vnto the Abbey of Lauercoſt, which they ſpoiled, and that done they departed, and paſſing by Na|warde Caſtell, & the town of Redpeth, kept on tyll they came vnto yt Priorie of Hexham, which they ſacked, but the Towne was ſaued from fire by commaundement of King Dauid, who in this iourney appointed to preſerue foure townes onely from burning, to witte, Hexham afore|ſayde, Corbridge, Darington, and Durham, to the ende he might in them lay vp ſuch ſtore of vi|tayles, as he ſhould prouide abrode in the Coun|trey, wherewith to ſuſteyne his army during the time of his abyding in thoſe parties.

Compare 1587 edition: 1 From Hexham, where he lay three dayes, he marched to Ebeheſter, waſting and ſpoyling the Countrey on eche hande, and after turned to|wardes the wood of Beaurepaire, and comming thyther,King Dauid lodged in the Manour of Beaurepaire. lodged himſelfe in the Manour, and ſet his people abrode into the Countrey to fetch in bootyes and to burne vp the townes and houſes in all places where they came.
