The transom of the cross-head is a modern replacement and has no authority. The upper arm of the cross shows an eagle holding a spray of foliage, probably a symbolic representation of Christ's ascension; this panel should be reversed so that it appears above the archer on the South side of the cross. Below are representations of St Matthew with his symbol (an angel) and St John the Baptist holding a lamb, a symbol of Christ. Eighth century.
