The Rupert Cross

This enormous cross probably stood behind or next to an altar, like the cross shown in the centre of the church in the St Gall plan of a monastery. The cross is of gilt-bronze on an oak base and is decorated with foliage scrolls and with five large jewelled panels similar, perhaps, to the five jewels on the cross in the opening vision of The Dream of the Rood. Eighth century.

Height 1.58m.
