'under stanhliþe . . .on dreorsele' - The exiled husband inhabits a type of landscape frequently found in elegaic poetry (for instance, in The Seafarer). Beflowen suggests an island, or perhaps a coastal cave or flooded ruin. Wentersdorf (1970) thinks he is 'on a boat, hugging a shore consisting of stony slopes'.
