'bitre burgtunas, brerum beweaxne' - Burgtun was a compound used frequently in place-names and many Burtons, Broughtons and Bourtons survey today. The term probably signalled an enclosure around a fortification. Klinck suggests that the brerum may indicate that the fortification is disused and overgrown.
