The isolation of the dreamer introduces a note of the "exile" theme found in poems like the Wanderer. It also, on a naturalistic level, carries the suggestion that the dreamer is old (if all his friends have died). This stance of the dreamer persona should perhaps be related to the end of Elene (cf. 1235a) where Cynewulf also presents himself as old and eager for death.
