"þenian" is assumed to be a variant of "þennan" (as in most translations) rather than a form of "þegnian/þenian", although the latter would be metrically possible and the idea of "serve as thane" applied to the tortures would have an ironic sense and could be said to fit the theme of the Cross as the thane of Christ. cf. Juliana 186b "ond §a f²mnan het / §urh ni wr²ce nacode §ennan,/ ond mid sweopum swingan ". Swanton cites the Benedictine Office p.97 "Crist was on rode aðened".
