Line 35 - Þær ic þa ne dorste ofer Dryhtnes word

The Cross's repeated expression of its reluctant obedience to its Lord's command is part of the characterisation of the Cross as a retainer of a lord (Christ) who is being forced to go against its instincts and kill rather than protect its lord. Its ability to strike down the enemies but refusal to do so and prevent the crucifixion can be seen as a reflection of the Agony in Gethsemane and is an element in the complex relationship of Christ and Cross.
