'God ana wat // hwa þære wælstowe wealdan mote.' - Byrhtnoth clearly states that the fate of the battle is in God's hands. When he is victorious in individual combat later in the poem (line 147) he 'sæde Metode þanc' ('said thanks to the Lord').
