Introduction to the Poem

The Battle of Maldon is probably the most-studied 'battle' poem in Old English literature. The long poem tells of the defeat of the English at the hands of the Vikings in 991 at Maldon (northern Essex). You will have to consider the poem's use of language, its relation to historical events and the poet's attitude to events on the battlefield.
