'wurþige . . . gelogige' - In the main manuscript, these verbs were in the preterite (wurþode . . . gelogode) before the reviser altered them to present subjunctives. Bury-St-Edmunds cathedral was probably served by secular canons until 1020, when these clerks were dispossessed and replaced by Benedictine monks. The alteration in tense may signal the aspiration of the reformers to greater purity of life.
