'mid menniscum gedwylde' - Abbo does observe that Leofric's madness detered others from demanding to see Edmund's body. Gedwylde seems problematic. Ælfric usually uses the term to describe heresy (or, more loosely, religious error). Here it seems to be a lack of faith that is reprehensible.
