'Gif . . . him' - Like Abbo, Ælfric quotes Ecclesiasticus 32.1: Principem te constituerunt? noli extolli, sed esto in illis quasi unus ex illis (Have they made thee ruler? be not lifted up: be among them as one of them). Compare Ælfric's direct translation of the scriptural passage here, with his practice later in the Life, when he quotes then translates Proverbs 24.11 (287-8). Skeat introduces Gif þu eart from a secondary manuscript; M-R's þu eart is preferable.
