'þa ymbe hlæw riodan hildediore' - Jordanes, who in the sixth century wrote a history of the Goths, describes the funeral of Attila (c. 453), at which the finest horsemen of the nation rode repeatedly round his body, reciting a funeral dirge in praise of his deeds.
