Compare 1587 edition: 1 After the Gouernour had hearde what an|ſweare was made to the Prouoſt, he cauſed the Caſtell to be furniſhed with all things neceſſa|ry for defence, and departed ſtraight wayes to Striuelyng. The Engliſh army lodging that night in Leith, marched the nexte day towarde Edenburgh, paſſing vp the Caunogate ſtreete to enter at the nether howe, where they founde ſome reſiſtaunce made by Scottes, ſo that di|uers were ſlayne on bothe partes. Towardes night, the Engliſhmen after they had continued long in ſkirmiſhyng that day with the Scot|tiſhmen retyred to Leith. The nexte day the whole army with the great Artillery came for|warde towardes the towne, and breakyng open the Cannogate,Edenburgh entred by force. they entred the towne by the ſame, bryngyng their ordinaunce within ſight of the Caſtell, purpoſing to plante the ſame in battery agaynſt it, but the Capitayne of the ca|ſtell cauſed the Artillery within to ſhoote of at them in ſo great aboundance, and ſo good mea|ſure,See more her|of in Englãd. that they ſlew diuers Engliſhmen and diſ|mounted one of their peeces, ſo that in the ende they were conſtrayned to drawe backe their or|dinaunce and retyred, but yet in the meane time they ſet fire on the towne,Edenburgh brent. and breute the moſte parte of all the houſes in the ſame. They brent alſo the Cannogate ſtreete, and the Abbey of ho|ly roode houſe. The Gouernour at that preſent releaſed out of pryſon the Erle of Angus,Pryſoners ſet at liberty. the Lorde Maxwell, the Maſter of Glencarne, ſir George Dowglas and others.

Compare 1587 edition: 1 In this meane time alſo there came from the Bordures by lande foure thouſande of Engliſh horſemenne, vnder the conduction of the Lorde William Evers, & his ſonne ſir Raufe Evers, who ioyning with the army at Leith, ſkoured the countrey on euery ſide the towne of Eden|burgh, finally after that the Engliſh army had layne in Leith a certayne ſpace,Leith brent. they brent that towne alſo, and ſent their ſhippes away fraught with pillage & ſpoyles (got aſwell in that towne as in Edenburgh, and abrode in the countrey) backe towardes England. And therewith the Erle of Hertford, the Lord Admirall and others returned by land through the coũtry vnto Bar|wike, as in the Engliſhe hiſtorie more at large appeareth. Whyleſt the Engliſhe army was thus occupied in that part of Scotlãd the Erle EEBO page image 462 of Lennox with an army of menne whiche he had rayſed was ready to come on the backes of the Gouernour and his adherentes,The Erle of Lennox. if they had aſſembled their forces and come forewarde to haue gyuen the Engliſh men battayle. For all this ſeaſon the ciuill contention ſtill conti|newed, and ſundry conflictes and ſkirmiſhes chanced betwixt the parties.

The Engliſh army hauing brente Eden|burgh and harried the countrey aboute, depar|ted from Leith (whiche towne they alſo brent) and drew homewardes, brenning and ſpoyling ſundry Caſtelles, Piles, Villages, & Townes in their way. Alſo where the Lorde Maxwell came in to the Erle of Hertforde, for his double dealyng hee was ſtayed and brought into En|glande. Shortly after the returne of the En|gliſh armie the Gouernour, and the Lord Boyd came with an army to beſiege the Caſtell of Glaſquo, which ye Erle of Lennox had lately a|gaine recouered. The Erle of Glencarne, and other of the Erle of Lennox his friendes, being at that preſent within Glaſquo, iſſued foorth, & vpon Glaſquo Moore gaue the Gouernour bat|tayle, in the whiche the Larde of Campſketh mayſter of the houſholde to the Gouernour, and vij.The battayle of Glaſquo wonne by the Gouernour. ſcore others, of the ſurname of the Hamiltõs loſte their lyues, but the victory yet remayned vpõ the Gouernours ſide, Andrew Coningham ſonne to the Erle of Glencarne, & Iames Co|ningham, with George Tullough Captaine of the Erle of Lennox his ſhotte, being ſlayne on that parte, beſides others of the meaner ſorte.
