Compare 1587 edition: 1 Thanes chan|ged into Earles.Many of them that before were Thanes, were at this time made Earles, as Fife, Menteth, A|tholl, Leuenox, Murray, Cathnes, Roſſe, and Angus. Theſe were the firſt Earles that haue beene heard of amongeſt the Scottiſhe men, (as their hyſtories make mention.) Many new ſur|names were takẽ vp at this time amongſt them,Surnames. as Cauder, Lokart, Gordon, Seyton, Lauder, Wawane, Meldrun, Schaw, Leirmouth, Li|bertoun, Strachquhen, Cargill, Rattrey, Dun|das, Cockbourne, Myrtoun, Menȝeis, Aber|crummy, Leſly, with many other that had poſ|ſeſſions giuen to them, which gaue names to the owners for the time.

Compare 1587 edition: 1 Alſo the proper names of many valiant cap|taynes were turned into generall ſurnames, as Kennedy, Graham, Hay, with dyuerſe other to long here to rehearſe. So that it came to paſſe then, as it hath done many tymes ſithence, that new ſurnames haue worne the olde out of vſe.
