The Maeatae - first recorded by Cassius Dio c. 200 - and Caledonians were confederacies of barbarian tribes in Britain north of Hadrian's Wall, with the Maeatae dominating the regions south of the Mounth and the Caledonians those north of it. Both Maeatae and Caledonians can be plausibly described as Picts, who did not constitute a people separate from them.
