The early Byzantine historian Zosimus, New History, trans. R.T. Ridley, Byzantina Australiensia 2 (1982), 51 (Book III, c.5): `From where the Rhine flows out into the Atlantic Ocean in the remotest part of Germany to the island of Britain is a distance of nine hundred stades ...'. Harrison's ability to cite this passage is noteworthy, since the first printed text of Zosimus had only just appeared, in a translation into Latin by Joannes Leunclavius published at Basel in 1576.
