John Jewel, bishop of Salisbury, 1522-1571. His best known work, Apologia pro Ecclesia Anglicana (1562), was published in an anonymous English translation in the year of its publication, and in another translation by Ann, Lady Bacon, in 1564. However, Jewel's response to Catholic criticism, his A defence of the `Apologie of the Churche of England' (1567), was written by him in English.
