Hilbre Island in the Dee estuary, off the north-west corner of the Wirral peninsula. A chapel on the island was granted to St Werburgh's Abbey, Chester, but seems to have served as a hermitage rather than as a monastic cell. Leland, Itinerary III, 91-2, the source for everything else that Harrison says about the island (except the comment on `supersticious fooles'), provides distances to various places in England, but says nothing about the time taken to sail to Ireland.
