As Giraldus Cambrensis records, the rulers of Gwynnedd held their court at Aberffro or Aberffraw; Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (d. 1240) styled himself `prince of Aberffraw', and in 1267 Llywelyn ap Gruffudd was acclaimed by a poet as `the crowned one of Aberffraw'.
