According to William of Malmesbury, and other sources, King Athelstan campaigned against the British of Cornwall in around 930, establishing the River Tamar as the boundary between Devon and Cornwall, and founding a bishop's see for the Cornish at St Germans. It was at this time that he was also said to have endowed a collegiate church at St Buryans.
