Probably an inaccurate reference. William of Malmesbury's Gesta pontificum has no appendix, contains no reference to King Lucius, and gives no dates for the comings either of the Saxons or St Augustine. But his Gesta regum notes the arrival of the Angles and Saxons in 449, and in `a long passage' added to some manuscripts refers to Lucius (in fairly unspecific terms) and dates Augustine's mission to 596 - William of Malmesbury, Gesta regum, ed. R.A.B. Mynors, R.M. Thomson and M. Winterbottom, I (Oxford, 1998), 16-17, 802-3, 810-11.
