The conversion in the 630s by Birinus of Cynegils, king of Gewisse (later Wessex), and the latter's grant to him of Dorchester to be his see, is recorded by Bede, Historia ecclesiastica, Book III c.7; but the accompanying grant of the surrounding land is a much later addition - it is not found in the writings of William of Malmesbury, for instance.
