The lordship of Maelor, in north-east Wales, came to be divided into Maelor Gymraeg and Maelor Saesneg, separated not by the Severn but by the Dee. Maelor Gymraeg, to the west of the river, became the marcher lordship of Bromfield and Yale. The Fitzwarins were lords of Whittington, a few miles to the south of it, from around the middle of the twelfth century.
